Above The Bar: PJ Clarke — From Ireland to Manhattan
March 18, 2012 on 5:00 pm | In Genealogy | No Comments
PJ Clarke was born in County Leitrim and arrived as a young man in Manhattan around the turn of the last century. Though he never married, he is the father of one of the all-time great saloons in the Irish diaspora, legendary PJ Clarke’s, housed on the ground floor of an 1870s tenement in midtown Manhattan. The cultural references to the bar are legion, in films, TV shows, magazines, on Broadway. And it all started with Patrick Joseph Clarke. WG TV’s David Tereshchuk visits the iconic watering-hole with Clarke’s grandniece, author Helen Marie Clarke, to get the story.

KARAMAAT E PEER SIAL (RAHMAT ULLAH ALAIHE) PART 3 OF 3
March 10, 2012 on 4:57 pm | In Genealogy | No Comments
Sial Sharif is famous for the Sufi shrine of Hz. Khwajah Muhammad Shamsuddin Sialvi, popularly known as Pir Sial, who was a waliullah (saint) belonging to the Chishti order. His descendants, all of whom are believed to have reached the highest levels of sainthood (one of them is explicitly designated by the title Qutb-al-Aqtab), are also buried in the same shrine. Today the Khanqah (Zawya, ie Sufi convent) of Sial Sharif is counted among the foremost Chishti centres of the Punjab, and indeed of the whole Indian subcontinent. Many spiritual personalities are or have been associated with Sial Sharif. Most notably, Hz. Pir Meher Ali Shah of Golra Sharif, the famous saint of the 20th century, was a faithful murid (disciple) of Pir Sial of Sial Sharif. So was Hz Pir Karam Shah Al-Azhari. To this day, the Islamic spiritual tradition is very much alive in this (Nizami) branch of the Chishti order. Its barakah (spiritual influence, blessing) is experienced by tens of thousands of disciples and visitors. Every Friday, scores of devotees travel long distances just to attend the Jumu’ah prayer there and obtain some blessings from the Holy Shrine. Attached to the spiritual centre (referred to as Darbaar, ie court) at Sial Sharif there is also a religious school (madrasa). Many other religious schools and mosques, scattered throughout Pakistan, are affiliated to the Darbaar of Sial Sharif. The Darbaar at Sial Sharif is closely linked to many other spiritual centres, including the …

Empress Menen Asfaw
March 5, 2012 on 4:57 pm | In Genealogy | 7 Comments
Empress Menen Asfaw (Baptismal name Wolete Giyorgis) (25 March 1889[1] – 15 February 1962) was the wife and consort of Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia. Empress Menen was the daughter of Asfaw, Jantirar of Ambassel. He was a direct descendant of Emperor Lebna Dengel, through Emperor Gelawdewos of Ethiopia and his daughter Princess Enkulal Gelawdewos and this genealogy was deleted from the official history of Etege Menen.[citation needed] The title of Jantirar has traditionally belonged to the head of the family holding the mountain fortress of Ambassel, and Jantirar Asfaw was one of them. Her mother was Woizero Sehin Mikael, half-sister of Lij Iyasu (Iyasu V), and daughter of Negus Mikael of Wollo. Woizero Sehin’s mother, Woizero Fantaye Gebru, was a direct descendant of Emperor Susenyos in the “Seyfe Melekot” line.[citation needed] Empress Menen and Emperor Haile Selassie were the parents of six children: Princess Tenagnework, Prince Asfaw Wossen (Emperor-in-Exile Amha Selassie I), Princess Tsehai, Princess Zenebework, Prince Makonnen Duke of Harrar, and Prince Sahle Selassie.
